Getting to Know Gary
Dr. Heathman earned his BS and MS degrees from Texas A&M University and his PhD from the University of Oklahoma. For over 30 years (1982-2013) he served as a research scientist for the USDA, Agricultural Research Service (ARS) as an expert in soil physics, hydrology, and satellite remote sensing to more effectively manage water resources and improve agricultural crop production.
During his career he developed innovative field, laboratory and modeling techniques for the calibration and validation of satellite-based measurements of soil moisture in collaboration with a leading government laboratory. Dr. Heathman has served as a research advisor and committee member for 3 Ph.D. students and 4 MS students at Purdue University (2004-2013) and supervised more than 30 students during his career with the USDA. His achievements have been well documented in over 70 scientific publications and in numerous invitations he accepted to speak about hydrologic modeling, remote sensing, and geographic information systems in the larger realm of global soil and climate measurement networks. In 1997 he received the national Collaborator of the Year Award from the Natural Resources Institute, USDA. He currently continues to serve as an advisor to students and scientists both nationally and internationally and is a visiting scholar and professor at Shandong Agricultural University in Taian, China. Dr. Heathman helped during the transition of Sign Shares Inc. after the passing of the Founder as he always maintained a close friendship with the Gunters, since Sign Shares Inc. began.
